Preschool Teacher’s Conferenceteachers conference

Project Nicaragua’s first Teacher’s conference was held in San Juan del Sur on Thursday, January 8th, 2009 where all 26 preschool teachers were invited to attend.  The main focus of the conference was to provide teachers with the "tools" needed to educate their students.  In coordination with the Ministry of Education, local businesses in SJDS, students and teachers in San Juan del Sur, a representative from the Newton City Sister Project,  a representative from the Jean Brugger Foundation* the Mobile Library, the local paper and radio station, and Project Nicaragua’s Field Officers and staff were in attendance.  Yadira Ponce, the superintendant for schools of San Juan del Sur from the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education brought greetings from the ministry and thanked the teachers for their ongoing dedication to education.

As recognition for their time diplomas and prizes were handed out to the teachers who had gone above and beyond.  Emphasis was placed on ensuring and maintaining student retention throughout the year as the Ministry of Education adopts a Cuban education model where no child gets left behind.  Other topics included engaging kids to decrease the spread of germs and parasites through thorough and frequent hand washing, creating support networks between teachers and communities, and different teaching methods.   Icebreakers and games were played and there was a lot of laughter!  The successful, fun day finished with lunch and a performance by local Nicaraguan dancers.

Field Officer Trip 2009

Having just returned from Nicaragua, Project Field Officers and executive members Lyndsey Rosevear, Kristin Fedorak and Jennifer Tynan laid the foundation to carry out work in 2009.

From December 30, 2008 to January 10, 2009 Project Nicaragua’s yearly planning meeting took place in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. Executives Lyndsey Rosevear, Jennifer Tynan and Kristin Fedorak spent twelve eventful days evaluating the progress from 2008, planning the future of the project from 2009 and onwards and meeting with local businesses, individuals and government officials to further examine how to better incorporate the surrounding communities into the project. The pinnacle of this year’s trip was the Teacher Convention that was held in to support our twenty-nine preschool teachers. With over forty people in attendance the Teachers Convention stressed the importance of education, health and appropriate and sustainable technology; which are cornerstones of the development for Project Nicaragua.  For more information on Project Nicaragua’s plans for 2009 please contact us at info@NicaCan.org

“Women In Fire” Calendar Fundraiser

Grand total from this fundraiser was $4429.04. Calendars were created that featured Women within the British Columbia Forest Service and highlighted the things they do outside of their job. The last month featured Lyndsey Rosevear and the various facets of Project Nicaragua. The production of the calendar could not have gone forward without Qwest Helicopters in Fort Nelson because of their generous donation of $1500. In addition, Alegra Printing donated half of their time, which reduced the cost of designing the calendar.
